Day 21 Gatlinburg
Today we travelled to Tennessee! We said good-bye to Cliff and Liz early and we were off in opposite directions. The ride through most of Virginia is great but somewhat monotonous! The road is divided so you can’t even see the other side and very, very lush and green. After a while though you feel as if you are driving through a green tunnel without end. The foliage is so thick you are forced to follow road signs for gas stations and roadside stops because it’s impossible to see what’s right beside you! Liz had identified Kudzu as a vine that grew wild over things in Virginia. Here is it unbelievable! It covers trees so completely here you can’t even see between the trees!
When you enter into Tennessee the terrain changes to
accommodate the Appalachian Mountains! Still trees and green for as far as the
eye can see but this time the changes in elevation vary the view – moving up
into the clouds will do that for you!
Heading off the highway and down into the towns of Pigeon
Forge (Dolly’s country), Sevierville and Gatlinburg. It’s certainly very
commercial but billboards set against the backdrop of these beautiful Smoky
Mountains can’t capture my eye!
The campground is lovely and we have a wonderful site right
on Little Pigeon River! The noisy night creatures have apparently travelled
with us and may even be louder here! I know that Cliff and Liz are reading this
and wondering how that is even possible! Where we are camped they sing along
with the brook that enters the river in a babbling accompaniment and the as the
sun goes down the fireflies provide the light show along the river.
Internet sucks so you may have to be patient with updates
but other than that...life is good in the Smokies!
